لمّح القاضي الاتحادي الأميركي ألفن هيلرستاين الأربعاء الماضي إلى أنه قد يأمر الحكومة بالإفراج عن نحو ألفي صورة تظهر نماذج سوء المعاملة للسجناء الذين احتجزتهم السلطات الأميركية بسجن أبو غريب في العراق وغيره من المواقع. ونقلت وكالة åرويترزò عن هيلرستاين قوله åإن هذا القرار يأتي عقب ما سماه فشل وزارة الدفاع الأميركية في إثبات وجهة نظرها بأن الإفراج عن الصور سيعرض حياة العاملين والجنود الأميركيين في الخارج للخطرò.
وقد أثارت مجموعة من الصور التي تكشف سوء المعاملة في أبو غريب عام 2004 جدلا عاما بشأن ما إذا كانت الولايات المتحدة قد مارست التعذيب عبر وسائل الاستجواب القاسية. وأوضح القاضي ذاته أنه سيسمح للحكومة بتقديم المزيد من الأدلة التي تدعم وجهة نظرها قبل أن يأمر بنشر الصور، وحدد لذلك جلسة 8 أيلول (سبتمبر) المقبل.
وأشار أيضا إلى أن وزير الدفاع السابق ليون بانيتا لم يدقق بكل صورة على حدة قبل أن يقرر في أواخر عام 2012 إبقاءها جميعها سرية.
وقال إنه تمكن من خلال هذه الدعوى من الاطلاع على بعض هذه الصور التي تبين أن الكثير منها غير ضار نسبيا، في حين يحتاج البعض الآخر إلى دراسة جدية، غير أن
وزارة الدفاع لم تعلق بشكل فوري على الحكم.
ولفتت الوكالة ذاتها إلى أنه في حال نشر الصور فإنها ستكون منقحة لإخفاء هويات الأشخاص الموجودين فيها. يشار إلى أن هذا النزاع القضائي مرتبط بدعوى رفعها åاتحاد الحريات المدنية الأميركيò عام 2004 تتعلق بوثائق وصور وأفلام فيديو عن طريقة معاملة السجناء وموت بعضهم أثناء احتجاز السلطات الأميركية لهم في الخارج إثر أحداث 11 سبتمبر(أيلول) عام 2001.
