واشنطن – كشف وزير الدفاع الأميركي، ليون بانيتا، عن ملامح ما يمكن وصفها بـ«المعركة المستقبلية» ضد تنظيم «القاعدة»، إلا أنه في الوقت الذي أشاد فيه بـ«إنجازات» حققتها الولايات المتحدة في هذا المجال، فقد شدد على أن هناك مزيداً من العمل في الانتظار.
وفي حديثه عن هجمات «11 أيلول»، قال بانيتا: «سوف نعمل كل ما هو ممكن للتأكد من أن مثل هذا الهجوم لن يتكرر مطلقاً، وهذا يعني أن مكافحة الإرهاب سوف تتواصل كمهمة رئيسية لقواتنا المسلحة ولمسؤولي الاستخبارات، طالما ظل المتطرفون يشكلون تهديداً مباشراً للولايات المتحدة». وأضاف الوزير الأميركي، في كلمة له أمام «مركز الأمن الأميركي الجديد»، وهو أحد المراكز البحثية في واشنطن، إن الجهود الرامية لإضعاف شبكة «القاعدة» من مركزها، أتت بنتائج إيجابية إلى حد كبير. وتابع في هذا الصدد قائلاً: «لقد تم القضاء على عدد كبير من المسؤولين في قيادة «القاعدة»، ويتضمن ذلك تصفية أربعة من بين أكبر خمسة قياديين، على مدار فترة العامين ونصف الماضية.. وهم أسامة بن لادن، والشيخ سعيد المصري، وعطية عبد الرحمن، وأبو يحيى الليبي».
إلا أن وزير الدفاع الأميركي أشار إلى أن تنظيم «القاعدة» مازال يشكل تهديداً، خاصةً خارج كل من أفغانستان وباكستان، في مناطق مثل اليمن، والصومال، وعدد من المناطق الأخرى. وقال: «نعرف أن القاعدة، إضافة إلى حلفائها والجماعات الموالية لها، تسعى إلى إقامة موضع قدم لها في دول أخرى في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، بما في ذلك تنظيم القاعدة في بلاد المغرب الإسلامي، وجماعة بوكو حرام في نيجيريا». وقال بانيتا في معرض حديثه عن تخفيض ميزانية وزارة الدفاع إنه «في حال انسحبنا من هذه المناطق الحاسمة في العالم فقد نعرض التقدم المهم الذي تحقق للإنتكاسة».
