واشنطن – تراجع زخم التهديد الأميركي بشن عدوان عسكري على سوريا إلى أدنى مستوياته مع الإعلان عن توصل الولايات المتحدة وروسيا إلى اتفاق على وضع الأسلحة الكيماوية السورية تحت الرقابة الدولية تمهيدا لتصفيتها في موعد أقصاه منتصف العام المقبل.
وبات واضحا أن الكونغرس الأميركي قد وضع جانبا موضوع التصويت على مشروع قرار بتفويض الرئيس الأميركي سلطة شن حرب على سوريا حيث بدت علامات الارتياح على الكثير من أعضاء الكونغرس بتأجيل التصويت إلى أجل غير مسمى على مشروع قرار لا يحظى بشعبية في الولايات المتحدة، حيث قام زعيم الأكثرية الديمقراطية في مجلس الشيوخ هاري ريد بسحب مشروع القرار. وسعى الأعضاء إلى استغلال التأجيل للعمل على مواجهة بعض القضايا المحلية المهمة المطروحة على جدول أعمال الكونغرس وخاصة الاقتصادية منها مثل الأزمة المالية التي تلوح في الأفق وتمويل الحكومة ورفع سقف الدين العام.
وقال أعضاء مجلس الشيوخ الأسبوع الماضي إن المعارضة المتزايدة لشن حرب على سوريا في أوساط الكونغرس لم يعط أي من الحزبين: الجمهوري أو الديمقراطي اليد العليا في القضايا الاقتصادية لكنهم اعترفوا بأن تهديد سوريا قد يصبح إلهاء كبيرا في الكونغرس. وقال العضو الديمقراطي في مجلس الشيوخ بن كاردين «عندما كنا نعمل على سوريا، فلم نكن نعمل على أي شيء آخر».
وقد تراوحت الأجواء التي سادت مواقف أعضاء الكونغرس تجاه الاتفاق الروسي-الأميركي ما بين مؤيد مرتاح ومنتقد وحذر متردد في التعبير، فيما هاجم جون ماكين وليندسي غراهام وهما أبرز صقور الحزب الجمهوري في مجلس الشيوخ الاتفاق بوصفه «لا معنى له» وجادلا بضرورة تقديم مزيد من المساعدات إلى المعارضة السورية.
