أبدى الرئيس الأميركي باراك أوباما مخاوفه من أن يتسبب تسرب وثائق خاصة بحرب أفغانستان في تعريض أفراد وعمليات للخطر، في وقت دعت فيه الحكومة الأفغانية الغرب إلى إعادة النظر في سياسته حيال باكستان ووقف تقديم المساعدات لها. وفي أول رد فعل له على نشر نحو 92 ألف وثيقة لوزارة الدفاع الأميركية حول حرب أفغانستان تظهر صلة بين عناصر في الاستخبارات الباكستانية وحركة طالبان الأفغانية، أبدى أوباما قلقه من هذا التسريب وقال إنه “يمكن أن يهدد أشخاصا أو عمليات ميدانية”. لكنه تدارك في تصريح مقتضب له في البيت الأبيض الثلاثاء قائلا إن “هذه الوثائق لا تكشف النقاب عن مشاكل لم نتطرق إليها خلال نقاشنا العلني حول أفغانستان”. وأوضح أوباما أن هذه الوثائق التي ترسم صورة متشائمة عن الوضع الميداني وتغطي الفترة ما بين عامي 2004 و2009، “تشير إلى الصعوبات نفسها التي دفعتني للقيام بإعادة نظر كاملة في سياستنا بأفغانستان خلال الخريف الماضي”.
