أوسلو – كشفت شبكة مستقلة لمراقبة الغابات الأسبوع الماضي أن عام 2016 شهد فقداناً غير مسبوق للأشجار بما يعادل مساحة نيوزيلندا بعد حرائق التهمت مساحات شاسعة غابات البرازيل وإندونيسيا، في حين عانت كاليفورنيا والبرتغال من حرائق فتاكة خلال العام الحالي.
وأفادت بيانات من «جامعة ماريلاند» قامت شبكة «غلوبال فورست ووتش» بجمعها بأن فقدان غطاء الأشجار على مستوى العالم ارتفع 51 بالمئة في 2016 ليصل إلى 29.7 مليون هكتار (73.4 مليون أيكر). ويمثل هذا زيادة قياسية بالنسبة لسجلات الشبكة التي تعود إلى عام 2000 كما يتناقض مع قياسات أخرى بالأقمار الصناعية تشير إلى تباطؤ وتيرة إزالة الغابات لإفساح المجال للمزارع والمدن والطرق، مقارنة بربع قرن مضى.
وأفاد تقدير للأمم المتحدة في 2015 أن العالم فقد 129 مليون هكتار من الغابات منذ 1990 وهو ما يعادل مساحة جنوب أفريقيا.
وقالت «غلوبال فورست ووتش» إن غابات الأمازون في البرازيل فقدت 3.7 مليون هكتار من الأشجار في 2016 وهو أكثر بثلاثة أمثال تقريباً عما فقدته في 2015. كما قالت «غلوبال فورست ووتش» إن إندونيسيا فقدت مليون هكتار تقريباً من الغطاء الشجري في 2016 نتيجة موسم الحرائق الهائلة في 2015 على الأرجح.
ولقي 42 شخصاً حتفهم هذا الشهر جراء حرائق غابات في كاليفورنيا بينما لقي أكثر من 100 شخص حتفهم في حرائق غابات بالبرتغال خلال الأشهر الأربعة الماضية.
