بيتسبرغ – فازت الطبيبة العراقية الأميركية منى حنا عتيشا بجائزة قدرها ٢٥٠ ألف دولار لدورها في الكشف عن فضيحة تلوث مياه فلنت وإصابة أطفال المدينة بتسمم الرصاص.
وكانت عتيشا واحدة من خمسة مكرمين في حفل مؤسسة عائلة هاينز الخيرية ومقرها مدينة بيتسبرغ بولاية بنسلفانيا.
وفازت عتيشا بجائزة المؤسسة عن فئة «السياسة العامة» لكشفها عام ٢٠١٥ تعرض أطفال فلنت لتسمم الرصاص. وفي تصريح لوكالة «أسوشييتد برس»، قالت طبيبة الأطفال والبروفسور في «جامعة ميشيغن ستايت» إن تسمم الرصاص أشبه بوباء صامت بين الأطفال لأن أعراضه لا تظهر سريعاً ولكن تسبب اضطربات عصبية قد تؤدي إلى تحديات سلوكية ودراسية ومشاكل صحية مستقبلياً.
وتعليقاً على نيلها الجائزة، قالت عتيشا «كنت قطعة الدومينو الأخيرة، والأبطال الحقيقيون هم سكان فلنت الذين كان يحتجون ويحضرون اجتماعات البلدية بسبب المياه البنية وكان يتم اعتقالهم».
وأضافت: «عندما قدمت استنتاجاتي تم إحباطي وانتقادي أيضاً»، مشيرة إلى أن مأساة فلنت كانت «يجب أن تتوقف مع تقدم أول أم بالشكوى قائلة إن أمراً ما ليس على ما يرام».
وبسبب أن تسمم الرصاص لا يمكن عكسه، قادت عتيشا مبادرة بالشراكة بين جامعتها ومستشفى «هيرلي»، لمساعدة أطفال فلنت المصابين بتلوث الرصاص عبر تحسين تغذيتهم معالجة بذلك العواقب الصحية المحتملة للتسمم بهذه المادة.
