نشرت لوس أنجلوس تايمز الأسبوع الماضي تساءلت فيه: عن إمكانية تحول أفغانستان إلى فيتنام باراك أوباما، وقالت انه من الممكن أن تصبح كذلك لكن ذلك لم يحدث بعد. وتابعت الصحيفة: ثمة فوارق عديدة بين الحربين في فيتنام وأفغانستان، لكن التاريخ قد يعيد نفسه إذا لم يتسن للرئيس الأميركي إيجاد الوسائل الكفيلة لجعل حكومة كابل تحقق النجاح المأمول في الجانب المدني. ومن تلك الفوارق أن الحرب في أفغانستان لا تزال تحظى بتأييد قوي من الرأي العام الأميركي. وعلى الرغم من تراجع ذلك التأييد فإن الحماسة لهدفها الأصلي المتمثل في القضاء على تنظيم القاعدة ظلت قوية. وتختلف حرب أفغانستان عن حرب فيتنام في أن عدد القوات في الحرب الدائرة حالياً أقل, ففي فيتنام عام 1969 تجاوز تعداد الجنود 500 ألف، مات منهم ما يزيد على 58 ألفا طوال فترة الحرب. أما في أفغانستان فسيبلغ عدد القوات الأميركية هناك 68 ألف جندي في وقت لاحق من العام الحالي. ووصل عدد الذين قُتلوا في العمليات لغاية الأسبوع الماضي 562 جندياً، أي 1 بالمئة من حصيلة قتلى حرب فيتنام. وثالث الفوارق بين الحربين يكمن في التقييم الأمين لمجريات الحرب. ففي فيتنام, قدم القادة الأميركيون لشعبهم تحليلاً منمقاً عنها، في حين وصف الأدميرال مايكل مولن –رئيس هيئة الأركان المشتركة- مؤخراً الوضع في أفغانستان بأنه “خطير ومتردٍ”. ولم يعد مولن –الذي بدأ حياته العسكرية ضابطاً في سلاح البحرية بفيتنام- بتحقيق أي نصر سريع في أفغانستان. وتقول صحيفة” لوس أنجلوس تايمز” إن الحرب طويلة ومكلفة وغير ناجحة، لكن أوباما وجنرالاته لا تزال لديهم الفرصة لتعديل ذلك الوضع. غير أن هناك سمة واحدة هامة على الأقل تتشابه فيها أفغانستان وفيتنام وهي أن الحكومة تفتقر إلى الكفاءة وغارقة في الفساد, الأمر الذي قد يقوض جهود الحرب. وحذر بروس ريدل –الذي أشرف على مراجعة سياسة الحكومة الأميركية في أفغانستان وباكستان- من أن أي انهيار سريع للحكومة الأفغانية على غرار ما حدث لحكومات فيتنام الجنوبية في ستينيات القرن الماضي فإن كل قوات الدنيا سوف لن تجدي نفعاً.
