تعهد الرئيس باراك اوباما بإلغاء القانون الذي يمنع مثليي الجنس من الخدمة في الجيش وجدد بذلك الرئيس وعده بإلغاء القانون الذي يحمل اسم “لا تسأل.. لا تخبر” الذي يلزم العسكريين مثليي الجنس على التكتم على ميولهم الجنسية والا يتم طردهم من الجيش. وقال اوباما خلال عشاء جمع ثلاثة آلاف ناشط من المدافعين عن حقوق مثليي الجنس “اريد ان الغي القانون “لا تسأل.. لاتخبر” هذا هو التزامي حيالكم”. واضاف “يجب الا نعاقب أميركيين وطنيين يريدون طوعا خدمة هذا البلد. يجب ان نثمن رغبتهم في اظهار الشجاعة والتفاني باسم مواطنيهم خصوصا عندما يقاتلون في حربين”. لكنه لم يحدد موعدا لإلغاء هذا القانون الذي يعود الى العام 1993 ويمنع العسكريين المثليين من الإناث والذكور من الكشف عن ميولهم الجنسية تحت طائلة تسريحهم من الجيش. ولدى بدء ولايته الرئاسية طلب بيل كلينتون من البنتاغون وضع حد للتمييز استنادا الى الميول الجنسية لدى المجندين. واحتجت رئاسة الأركان على ذلك شأنها في ذلك شأن الحزب الجمهوري وقسم كبير من الرأي العام الأميركي. وبعد نقاشات طويلة تم التوصل الى تسوية لم تلغ منع مثليي الجنس من الخدمة في صفوف الجيش لكنها خففت منه. وقام اوباما بتوسيع نطاق بعض المنح الفدرالية لتشمل شركاء موظفي الحكومة الأميركية من الجنس الواحد. لكنه يتعرض لضغوط من ناشطين لكي يطبق وعده خلال الحملة الانتخابية بإلغاء هذا القانون المتعلق بالجيش وهو موضوع شديد الحساسية في الولايات المتحدة.
