انخفض دخل الأميركيين في شهر آب (أغسطس) الماضي بـ0,1 بالمئة مقارنة بتموز (يوليو)، وذلك لأول مرة منذ قرابة عامين حسب تقرير لوزارة التجارة الأميركية، ومع ذلك زاد الإنفاق الاستهلاكي بشكل طفيف قدر بـ0,2 بالمئة وهو ما يتماشى مع توقعات الاقتصاديين بعد ارتفاعه بـ0,8 بالمئة في تموز الماضي. وأوضحت الوزارة أن أغلب الزيادة في الإنفاق مرده إلى ارتفاع أسعار المواد الغذائية والغاز. وكان اقتصاديون قد توقعوا ارتفاع الدخل بـ0,1 بالمئة، لكن تقلصه أظهر بشكل أكبر بأن الأسر في وضع صعب. ويشكل إنفاق المستهلكين أكبر محرك للاقتصاد الأميركي حيث يشكل 70 بالمئة من النشاط الاقتصادي، وعندما يتقلص دخل الناس فإنهم يخفضون إنفاقهم الاستهلاكي مما يبطئ النمو الاقتصادي برمته.
