حكم على رجل أدين بصرف شيكات التقاعد لوالده المتوفي لمدة 30 عاما حصل خلالها على نصف مليون دولار، بالحبس المنزلي سنة واحدة ووضعه بعد ذلك تحت المراقبة مدة سنتين. وفي التفاصيل فإن بيتر سباينو (78 عاما) من بيركليف مانور، ظل يتلقى الشيكات من هيئة السكة الحديد الأميركية دون أن يبلغها أن والده توفي عام 1983، ليصل مجموع ما أرسلته الهيئة من شيكات الى 486 ألف دولار أودعت في حساب والد بيتر المتوفي.
وقد إعترف سباينو بجناية سرقة أموال حكومية في آذار (مارس) الماضي وحكم عليه في 12 آب (أغسطس) بدفع 45 ألف دولار للحكومة على سبيل التعويض تم دفعها بالفعل. وأظهرت سجلات المحكمة بأن محامي الدفاع طلب من المحكمة التساهل في الحكم على موكله بإعتباره مرّ في ظروف معيشية عصيبة وبائسة تمثلت في تعرضه لحادثة في العمل عام 1973 بتر فيها 3 من أصابعه، وبعدها بـ 7 سنوات أصيب بحروق بالغة جراء حريق شب في منزله.
وكانت أجريت التحقيقات مع سباينو بشأن الشيكات في حزيران (يونيو) 2012 حين بعثت هيئة السكك الحديدية رسالة الى والد بيتر، كارمن سباينو طلبت فيها منه الإتصال بها، حيث قام بيتر بالرد على الإتصال عقب شهر مدعيا أن والده يقيم منذ مدة طويلة في أوروبا وشمال إفريقيا وأنه لا يعرف له عنواناً محدداً وأنه يتصل معه أحيانا وفي فترات متقطعة، وقال لموظف في الهيئة بأن والده مريض وربما توفي. حينها أبلغته الهيئة بأنها ستوقف الشيكات لحين ظهور والده، إعترض بيتر وطالب بمنحه مهلة أسبوعين في محاولة للإتصال بوالده.
وفي الشهر التالي تم التحقيق مع بيتر من قبل åإف بي آيò وقال لهم بانه يرسل المال لوالده من خلال ويسترن يونيون، لكنه إعترف للمحققين لاحقا بأن والده متوفي.
